Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has made headlines with a declaration that sounds like science fiction: we are already in the era of superintelligence. “We are past the event horizon; the takeoff has started,” he said in June 2025. In Altman’s view, the  development of AI is not merely advancing—it is accelerating at an unprecedented pace.

He predicts that by 2026 we’ll see agents capable of real cognitive work. By 2027, systems that generate truly novel insights. And soon after, physical robots that can effectively act in the world. These milestones, he argues, mark a path to digital superintelligence: a class of systems whose intellectual capacity outstrips human intelligence across nearly every domain.

And yet, despite Altman’s confident tone, many scientists, engineers, and philosophers remain unconvinced that these systems are anywhere near understanding the world in the way humans do.

Powerful Tools, Not Thinking Minds

Critics of the superintelligence narrative often fall back on a simple, central claim: AI doesn’t understand. While today’s large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT can generate complex, coherent, and seemingly insightful responses, these systems don’t possess original thought. Instead, they are trained to statistically predict the most likely sequence of words given a prompt.

They don’t know what words mean, nor do they have beliefs, goals, or awareness. Their output can sound astonishingly intelligent, but it is the product of scale, not understanding.

This limitation becomes especially clear when models are pushed beyond common scenarios. They fail basic reasoning tasks under novel constraints. They hallucinate facts. They follow biases in their training data. Critics argue that these limitations aren’t mere bugs to be fixed, but signs of a deeper conceptual flaw: that these systems aren’t “intelligent” at all, at least not in any meaningful human sense.

Altman’s Vision of Accelerating Intelligence

Altman, however, is not making claims lightly. As the head of one of the world’s most advanced AI labs, he speaks from a front-row seat to technology most of us haven’t yet seen. He points to a phenomenon known as recursive self-improvement. In this cycle, AI tools are used to design and refine the next generation of AI systems, accelerating development exponentially.

This idea—that AI could soon be building better AI—is at the heart of the superintelligence discussion. If real, it means we’re not just on a fast-moving train. We’re on one that’s laying down track while accelerating, with no clear end in sight.

Altman suggests that this could condense a decade of AI research into a year—or even a month. If that happens, he predicts, we’ll move from solving complex physics problems to initiating space colonization within a decade. Grandiose? Certainly. But, as he notes, a few years ago, current AI capabilities were also dismissed as implausible.

A Counterweight of Caution

Despite Altman’s confidence, many researchers argue that we’re still far from anything resembling true intelligence. The systems may appear impressive, but under the hood they are brittle, shallow, and easily derailed.

Critics like cognitive scientist Gary Marcus have pointed out that these models can’t reason through causality, struggle with abstract concepts, and don’t generalize well outside of their training distributions. To these voices, the AI we have is not the precursor to a general superintelligence. It’s an extremely efficient compression algorithm for human text.

In fact, even the notion of “emergent abilities” in AI is contentious. Some researchers believe these abilities are not emergent at all, but simply a reflection of better training data, model tuning, and cherry-picked benchmarks. The idea that these systems are experiencing “takeoff” may be more marketing than science.

Alignment: The Thorny Problem Beneath the Progress

One area where even optimists and skeptics agree is on the importance—and difficulty—of alignment. That is, ensuring AI systems act in ways that align with human intentions and values.

Altman has acknowledged that “solving the alignment problem” is among the most critical technical and ethical challenges of the next decade. He draws a chilling comparison to today’s social media algorithms, which optimize for engagement by exploiting psychological vulnerabilities. If superintelligence follows a similar path—maximizing objectives we can’t fully specify—the consequences could be catastrophic.

The challenge isn’t just building powerful systems. It’s ensuring they do what we want, even when “what we want” is hard to define. In a world with diverse cultures, competing interests, and conflicting ethical frameworks, designing AI systems that reflect a unified “collective will” may be nearly impossible.

Economic Disruption and Social Shocks

Altman believes superintelligence could make the world vastly wealthier, potentially unlocking policy solutions that were never before viable. Yet, he also concedes that “whole classes of jobs” could disappear faster than society can adapt.

He offers a thought experiment: A subsistence farmer from 1,000 years ago might view modern office jobs as bizarre and pointless. Likewise, future generations may look back on our current professions with bemusement. This isn’t necessarily a dystopia, Altman argues—it could be a world of abundance, creativity, and new forms of meaning.

Still, the transition is likely to be messy. Economists warn of structural unemployment, rising inequality, and geopolitical instability. These risks are not theoretical—they’re already visible in sectors where AI has begun to replace human labor.

Beyond the Binary: Holding Two Ideas at Once

The truth may not lie fully with either side of the debate.

Yes, current AI lacks understanding. But it also performs tasks that once seemed to require intelligence. Language generation, code completion, image synthesis—each has been transformed by systems that function purely through pattern recognition. Even if today’s AI lacks “mind,” its impact is real.

At the same time, projecting a short path from LLMs to general superintelligence assumes that more data and more compute will naturally give rise to consciousness, creativity, and wisdom. That’s far from certain. Intelligence is not a linear path. It may require entirely new paradigms we haven’t discovered yet.

What’s clear is that the superintelligence conversation isn’t just about what’s possible. It’s also about what we value. How do we define intelligence? What kind of future do we want? Who gets to decide?

What’s Next?

If Altman is right, we’ll see agents making real discoveries, physical robots transforming industry, and AI systems handling tasks most of us thought uniquely human. The challenge will be managing alignment, ethics, and economics at unprecedented scale.

If the critics are right, AI will remain an incredibly powerful—but ultimately limited—tool. It will shape industries and societies, but it will not think. Our job will be to design with care, regulate wisely, and never mistake fluency for understanding.

Either way, the road ahead is one of profound change. And the questions we ask today—about responsibility, safety, and truth—will echo long into the future.

As Altman put it in one of his more introspective moments:

“May we scale smoothly, exponentially, and uneventfully through superintelligence.”

Whether that happens—or whether we crash into our own creation—depends not just on the tech, but on how wisely we use it.
