In the intersection of healthcare and technology, the real challenge isn’t just building software—it’s building trust. That’s especially true when your users include elderly individuals, caregivers, and families navigating the delicate terrain of personal support services. Seniors First came to life with a clear mission: to create a platform that makes it easy for people in need of care to find qualified, trustworthy professionals—quickly, securely, and without technological barriers.
From day one, the project posed a unique blend of user experience, regulatory, and technical challenges. Our goal at Zarego was to build an intuitive, secure, and scalable system that empowered users on both sides of the care equation: those providing support and those who depend on it. Here’s how we designed, built, and scaled a platform that now serves more than 100,000 users across Europe—and is already preparing for its next phase of global expansion.
Understanding the Problem: Designing for Two Very Different Users
Unlike traditional marketplaces or platforms that cater to a single, homogenous user group, Seniors First required us to serve two distinct—and often very different—types of users.
On one end were caregivers: licensed professionals with varied levels of technical fluency, seeking a platform that could highlight their experience, validate their credentials, and connect them with people in need of support.
On the other end were care seekers: often elderly individuals or their families, navigating the process of finding someone they could trust to assist with daily living tasks, medical recovery, or ongoing companionship. Many of these users were not particularly comfortable with digital platforms and had heightened concerns around security, clarity, and ease of use.
The stakes were high. This platform wasn’t just about convenience—it was about dignity, safety, and reliability. And it had to meet the most rigorous privacy standards in the world: the GDPR.
The challenge was clear. We needed to design a platform that was intuitive and friendly enough for users with little to no digital experience, yet powerful and secure enough to handle sensitive data and perform complex matchmaking functions. And we had to do all of that while maintaining seamless performance across devices, geographies, and use cases.
Mapping the Strategy: From Discovery to Deployment
We approached the project in phases, beginning with a comprehensive discovery stage that included stakeholder interviews, market research, and user flow analysis.
We conducted field interviews with caregivers and seniors, many of whom had experienced frustration with existing care coordination platforms. We learned that most systems were either too generic—designed without regard to the unique dynamics of caregiving—or too complex, requiring users to navigate bloated dashboards or confusing application flows.
From these early conversations, one insight stood out: empathy-driven design would need to guide every step of our process. That meant not just meeting technical requirements, but designing for real human needs—simplicity, transparency, and trust.
Tech Stack and Architecture
With these insights in hand, we selected a tech stack that would allow for flexibility and performance:
- A modular front-end architecture using React, designed to deliver fast, responsive interactions across both desktop and mobile platforms
- A robust Node.js backend with a scalable API architecture, enabling rapid feature development and integrations
- Secure cloud deployment using AWS, with automated DevOps workflows for testing and deployment
- Role-based authentication and access controls, including multi-factor verification for both caregivers and clients
- Data encryption both at rest and in transit, ensuring GDPR compliance and enterprise-grade security
To support growth across multiple regions, we also built the platform with multi-language support and localization in mind from the outset.
Solving the Design Challenge: Accessibility and Security in One
One of the most critical challenges we faced was balancing ease of use with data protection. On the caregiver side, the application process required users to submit sensitive documents and personal information. On the client side, many users were in vulnerable positions—either recovering from illness, living alone, or navigating digital interfaces for the first time.
To address this, we introduced several UX principles into the design process:
- Typography and contrast were carefully selected to ensure readability for elderly users, particularly those with visual impairments.
- Navigation was kept intentionally shallow, with clear call-to-action buttons, visible backtracking options, and a persistent help section.
- Forms were broken into simple, progressive steps that reduced cognitive load and provided feedback at every stage.
We also implemented a video CV feature that allowed caregivers to record short introductions. This not only helped build trust with clients but gave professionals a way to express their personality and communication style—an important factor in such personal relationships.
On the security front, we deployed a combination of end-to-end encryption protocols and GDPR-compliant data storage policies. Caregivers were required to undergo verification, including document validation and background checks, before being approved. Every interaction with sensitive data was logged and auditable.
Building a Two-Sided Marketplace That Works
What truly differentiates Seniors First is its intelligent matchmaking system. Instead of relying on simple location or keyword filters, the platform uses a combination of data validation, preferences, and historical behavior to create optimal pairings between caregivers and clients.
Key technical features include:
- Smart Filtering: Clients can filter caregivers based on services offered, availability, certifications, and proximity.
- Profile Verification: The system verifies credentials and cross-checks certifications using regional data sources.
- Video-Based Introductions: Caregivers can upload a short video introduction to create a more personal first impression.
- Feedback Loops: Post-service reviews help continuously improve match accuracy and build a trustworthy reputation system.
- Monitoring and Analytics: An IT monitoring dashboard allows administrators to detect anomalies, track platform performance, and generate reports on user behavior and conversion.
This architecture supports rapid growth without compromising stability or security, and it has already proven resilient as the platform scaled to thousands of users across multiple countries.
The Impact: A Growing Community Built on Trust
Since launch, Seniors First has grown to support over 100,000 users across Europe. More importantly, the platform has helped countless families find the care they need—while giving professionals a reliable, well-designed tool to grow their practice.
Some of the most impactful results include:
- A significant reduction in time to match between clients and caregivers, driven by the intelligent algorithm and responsive design
- Widespread adoption among older users, thanks to the accessible interface and clear communication at each step
- Enhanced safety and compliance, with all personal data managed in full accordance with GDPR regulations
- Lower dropout rates during onboarding, indicating that the user journey was intuitive even for non-digital natives
- A successful pilot for expansion into the United States, backed by a scalable infrastructure and localization-ready architecture
As Juan Biganzoli, the project manager, described it:
“Today they have a full ecosystem that has helped connect both sides and an ever-growing client base with over 100,000 users in just a few years.”
Lessons Learned and What Comes Next
This project reinforced an important lesson we carry into every engagement: real innovation happens at the intersection of empathy and engineering.
Too often, digital products are designed around features and functions, with limited thought given to the emotional and cognitive needs of users—especially in healthcare, where the stakes are deeply personal. What made this platform successful wasn’t just the technology stack, or the compliance, or the scalability. It was the decision to make every user—caregiver and client alike—feel seen, understood, and safe.
Looking ahead, the platform is preparing for additional features such as:
- Support for in-app video consultations
- Integration with electronic health record (EHR) systems
- AI-enhanced caregiver recommendations
- Expanded analytics for operational optimization
As the team looks to launch in new markets, the foundation we’ve built ensures they’re not just scaling a product—they’re scaling trust.
